The health concerns of tobacco include the effect they have on one’s senses. Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of visual disorders and blindness in the United States. Smoking affects the way the sense organs function, such as food doesn’t taste as good, flowers don’t smell the same, and hearing can be harmed.
Smoking is also very hard on the skin and nails. Smoker’s nails tend to be a yellowish brown. Smokers also get wrinkled younger and more harshly then non smoker’s, especially in the face. Smoking also raises the chances of getting certain types of skin diseases.
Another of the health concern of tobacco is the affect it has on the immune system. It weakens the antibodies and the cells that attack foreign substances in the blood.
Tobacco affects male and female reproductive organs. It can cause cancer in both and early menopause for women. Men can be adversely affected with sexual dysfunction, and possibly become infertile. Pregnant women risk the health and life of the unborn child.
Smoking can upset the delicate balance of the nervous system, especially in the younger smoker. It can cause some diseases of the nervous system, or make them worse if they are already present.
About twenty percent of all ulcers are caused by the use of tobacco. The more often it is used the more likely an ulcer will develop. Tobacco causes several nasty cancers of the digestive tract.
In the last several years, scientists have discovered tobacco worsens kidney damage in people with problems like diabetes or high blood pressure. Also they discovered that men who smoke have worse kidney function then non smoking men.
About 2.5 million people have a disease called “lupus” a chronic disease that is caused by a problem in the immune system. Smokers are more likely than non smokers to have this disease and the tobacco can interfere with the medication, making it less efficient.
Mental health problems have been linked, but researchers are not yet sure whether smoking contributes to mental problems or if someone with mental health is just more likely to start smoking. However, studies suggest that smoking may contribute to causing anxiety disorders.
Tobacco causes serious problems with bones. It weakens the bones and if one is broken, it takes longer to heal then for a non smoker. The bones are also affected by all the toxins found in cigarettes.
All these health concerns of tobacco make it more and more important if you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quit.
